Welcome to the first edition of GAELIC Notes - a newsletter designed as a collection of short notes to keep the staff in the GAELIC member libraries informed and up-to-date about noteworthy happenings and notable people within, and beyond the GAELIC region. The newsletter will also be distributed to "friends" of GAELIC to share news about the consortium and invite colleagues from across the library and information sector to participate in both FOTIM and GAELIC activities and events.
Tanya Healey of the GAELIC Office" is the editor of the newsletter. The inspiration behind the "notes" look of your newsletter was started by the Marketing Team in 2000. The concept was then expanded during the visits by the GAELIC staff to each of the member libraries towards the end of 2004. Library Directors have been very supportive in the development of the newsletter and have provided the GAELIC Office with staff lists so that we are able to communicate directly with over 1000 colleagues who work in our member libraries. In response to your suggestions during the site visits, we have enjoyed creating a truly "online publication" that is friendly, quick-to-read and contains news about colleagues, events, useful links, notices and anything else that you might like to see as content.
The Editor welcomes your clever ideas to develop the newsletter to serve the needs of the GAELIC community. The intention is that items contains approximately 200 words or, alternatively, a hyperlink to longer items of interest. We would be delighted to receive items for inclusion as well as your views about the newsletter. Please forward them to tanya@fotim.ac.za
Nota Bene - please note!
The GAELIC Office has "gone virtual" from June 2005! Apart from the changes to the office telephone numbers, which are listed below, it will be business as usual for the FOTIM/GAELIC Team. The staff will be optimising the use of technology and networks to create a fully wired office within the GAELIC environs. This bold step grew out of the FOTIM strategic planning sessions at the end of 2004. Sadly, we have moved from FOTIM House, which we have occupied happily for the past five years, but we will retain offices at Wits on the 2nd floor of Senate House, rooms 2002 AND 2003. These will become the new "core" of FOTIM, and will be occupied by Jenny. Heather, Anke, Gwenda and Tanya will be working from home, and FOTIM will continue to operate as usual.

GAELIC 2005 Symposium
GAELIC is very proud to have taken a strategic leadership role in presenting its first symposium entitled "The e-Services Environment: Changing to a Higher Gear" held at the CSIR International Convention Centre, Pretoria from 9-10 May 2005. With the rapid technological changes that are characterising the research environment of the academic libraries, there is relentless pressure on their staff to be aware of developments, learn new applications and support their researchers with the right services and skills.

GAELIC members will meet with Paula Kaufman, University Librarian at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (USA) on 5 July 2005 at the University of Witwatersrand Library from 10:30 - 15:00 |
Thanks to Lebo Mphalele and Mihloti Mayevu, two librarians from the University of Limpopo (Turfloop Campus) for writing about what it means to be an academic librarian and GAELIC:
