Dear GAELIC friends

This month, the newsletter looks at outcomes of the strategic planning session held in April; at the activities of the Innovative Focus Group; events in the LIS sector and the latest happenings in the FOTIM Office.

With warm winter wishes
From the GAELIC and FOTIM Office.
Strategic Planning
Governing Board members and Focus Group leaders met in February and April to discuss the way forward for GAELIC for 2007 - 2008. The goals and objectives were revised

Goals
  • To support member libraries in facilitating the creation, use and management of knowledge
  • To provide innovative information access and services through implementing cost-effective strategies for state-of-the-art systems and resources
Objectives
  • Investigate and implement a joint integrated Millennium system
  • Build capacity through identification and provision of training needs and services for optimal utilisation of resources
  • Improve cost-efficiency through joint procurement and resource sharing

Innovative/Millenium Focus Group
The Innovative/Millenium Focus Group is busy implementing a project to investigate the Millenium system. A Project Team has been appointed and consists of the following members: Lettie Erasmus (UNISA), Soekie Swanepoel (University of Pretoria), Maria Sibanda (University of Limpopo) and Carina Malan (University of Johannesburg). The team recently participated in the DITCHE National Library Event held in Port Elizabeth.

As the first project activity, the Focus Group compiled a questionnaire which will establish the current state of the usage of the Millennium system and identify problems. The questionnaire has been distributed to GAELIC Libraries, and will be followed by site visits to all the libraries, probably during July / August 2007.

The Focus Group met on 15 May 2007, the notes of which are available on the website.

Welcome to our new FOTIM Director
A warm welcome to our new Director, Dr K.N. Magwenzi, who will join the FOTIM Team from 1 June 2007.

Dr Magwenzi is a seasoned university academic with extensive knowledge and experience in development initiatives in higher education institutions both nationally and internationally. She has managed diverse educational and social development projects and has played a major role in fostering institutional and organizational collaborations.
FOTIM/GAELIC Quality Assurance Conference 2008
Planning for the 3rd FOTIM Quality Assurance Conference, June 2008, has begun. Once again libraries will be a very important component of the conference and GAELIC librarians are encouraged to participate - it is a perfect opportunity for presenting papers in a relaxed environment and for networking with national and international colleagues!! Libraries will be represented on the Conference Planning committee by a CHELSA nominee. Regarding the general theme and specific topics, you'll hear about them 'hot off the press' in the GAELIC newsletter, so WATCH THIS SPACE…
Goodbye to Di Man
At the end of April, GAELIC said farewell to Di Man, who has left the University of the Witwatersrand. Di has been part of GAELIC since its inception, and her contribution to GAELIC will be sadly missed.

Di was Chairperson of the ICT Team and later the leader of the Shared Storage Facility Focus Group. She has driven many GAELIC Projects and initiatives over the last 10 year.

We wish her all the best for her future endeavors.
People to People Ambassadors Programme
On 19 April 2007, the University of Johannesburg hosted an American delegation of Special Libraries professionals. The group was one of the People to People Ambassadors Programmes. In addition to a walk-about in the Archives and the Law Library, talking points included the history and structure of the UJ Department of Information and Knowledge Management, library co-operation, bibliographic utilities, technological advancements and professional education for librarians in South Africa. Presentations were given by Prof Adeline du Toit, Hannie Sander, Di Man, Felix Ubogu and Clare Walker.

The 2007 GAELIC Support Services Workshop will be held on 18 July in Midrand. Please diarise this date, more details coming soon….
