GAELIC Strategic Approach (2009)
With the winding down of the Innopac/Millennium project, the members decided that it was time to assess the success of this project and to use 2009 to plan a new strategic approach for the years ahead. A new strategic plan was accepted by the GAELIC Governing Board and restructuring of the overall GAELIC process has been put into place. The previous approach which relied on small specialist focus groups has been rationalised into three main focus objective areas and each group is holding regular meetings and workshops aimed at their specific focus area.
In an attempt to be as inclusive a possible, all member institutions have at least one representative on the teams driving each objective area. Teams are managed by an Operational Manager and overseen and advised by a Convenor who is a member library head/director. For more details see the organisational diagram.
GAELIC Innopac Project (2006-2008)
In September 2006, a proposal for a planning
grant was submitted to the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, to enable GAELIC to investigate the impact of different
software models in libraries within GAELIC. In
October 2007, the trustees of the Andrew W Mellon Foundation
approved a grant of $50 000 to support an assessment of the
functionality of the library system of GAELIC.
Implementation
of the project commenced in 2007, with questionnaires being
comlpeted by all member institutions. The questionnaire process was
followed by site visits to all institutions.
The Innopac
Investigation Team visited Spain and Estonia at the beginning of
2008, and the results of the investigation were shared with GAELIC
members on 29 July 2008.
The final report to the Andrew W Mellon Foundation was sent at the end of February. The Project was a great success and GAELIC acknowledges all the hard work and input of its members who made this a possibility. In order to ensure that all the member libraries were at the same level of implementation of the Millennium, GAELIC was given permission to use some of the remaining funds from the original grant to pay for the services of an expert to assist the University of Venda to update and clean up their system.

GAELIC / SALIT (2005) Interlending project:
Investigation into performance levels of interlending and document
supply in GAELIC
This project, funded by the South African Library and Information Trust (SALIT),
investigated the performance levels of GAELIC Libraries in requesting and supplying books and articles within the interlending system.
The project results are available below. The results were also
distributed to member libraires on CD-ROM.
GAELIC Member Survey (2005)
A comprehensive member survey was conducted in 2005 to assess the digital status of the members and to compile an overall membership profile. Also under investigation were needs to be addressed by the consortium. Many of the results from the survey were used to establish the basis for the subsequent Innopac projects and staff training needs assessments.
The survey results were distributed to the libraries on CD-ROM in November
2005.
